Why Putin doesn't accept Donetsk's accession to Russia ?



Self proclaimed region " Donetsk People's Republic" has appealed to Russian president Vladimir Putin to consider its accession with Russia.However, he seems to be so reluctant and not rushes to grab the territory as he did in March after referendum in Crimea. 

 Additionally, Putin has also called the pro-Russian groups in the East to postpone the voting that was held in favor of seeking independence from the Ukrainian government, but his suggestion has been ignored. This means that Putin is trying to distance Russia from Ukrainian crisis, especially the uprising in the Eastern part of Ukraine. Actually, there are many reasons why Putin is less interested in annexing Donetsk and Lugansk.

Firstly, the both regions are not a vital strategic territory to be annexed. If we focus on the geography, the two regions are not worth to Russia as Crimea peninsula. Control of Crimea can undeniably provide much more benefits to Russia especially military benefits. Moreover, it gives Russia the access to the naval base at warm water port Sevastopol and the Black Sea Fleet.Unlike Crimea, Donetsk and Lugansk actually are not strategically militarily beneficial to seize.

Secondly, one scenario can't be used twice. Russia can't reuse the scenario which was used in Crimea otherwise it will face up with many more severe consequences. The scenario in Crimea actually shocks the West and U.S the most and if Russia keeps repeating the scenario, It will not be tolerated.

Third, it should be sanctions. We generally think that sanctions imposed by the western countries might not work properly to pressure and force Russia to return back the territory. But if we think deeply the sanctions are not imposed on Russian nation as a whole but only the high ranking officials, banks and cronies who have close relationship with the Kremlin; for instance, asset freeze and visa ban. It means that the sanctions still work well but just need time.Later or sooner it will severely suffer the Russia's economy.

Last but not least, it must be the military confrontation. After Russia illegally occupied Crimea, NATO and US start building up their military capability by conducting the series of military exercises and deploying numbers of forces to the countries which are bordered by Russia. Thus, any new moves of Russia to further conquer Ukraine's lands, the military actions would be taken place and it would surely result in the casualties and military clash
